Why Your Software Choice Matters More in India Than Anywhere Else
In Hollywood, the industry has largely standardized. In India, it has not — and probably will not for another decade. We have Bollywood post houses running Avid suites that cost more than a small apartment in Goregaon. We have Tamil indie directors cutting their feature debuts on DaVinci Resolve Free on a refurbished MacBook. We have ad agencies in Bandra where every editor is on Adobe Premiere Pro, cutting 90-second spots for OTT pre-rolls.
This fragmentation is both a challenge and an opportunity. Learn the wrong software, and you may walk into an interview and be immediately disqualified. Learn the right one, and you become useful on day one — which is how you get hired in a city that does not do second chances.
The other India-specific reality: hardware costs, internet speeds, and software pricing in rupees are genuinely different from what global YouTube tutorials account for. We will cover all of that.
The Big Four: A Full Breakdown
1. Adobe Premiere Pro
Pricing (India market estimate, 2026): Rs. 1,675–4,230/month depending on the plan (Creative Cloud individual vs. team). Annual plans reduce cost. Verify current pricing at adobe.com/in — rates change frequently.
Learning curve: Moderate. If you have ever used any Adobe product — Photoshop, After Effects, Audition — the interface logic transfers. Most beginners are cutting basic timelines within a week. Real proficiency with multicam, proxy workflows, and team projects takes three to six months.
Where it dominates in India: This is the go-to software for ad film production, branded content, and web series aimed at OTT platforms. If you walk into a production house in Lower Parel that primarily does commercial work, there is a very high chance the editing department runs Premiere Pro. Most YouTube documentary creators, independent filmmakers releasing on Netflix India or Amazon Prime Video, and news broadcast editors also work in Premiere.
Strengths:
- Deep integration with After Effects — which means VFX and motion graphics hand-off is nearly seamless
- Dynamic Link lets you send clips directly to After Effects without rendering
- Strong multicam support, which matters enormously in reality TV and live event coverage
- Adobe Audition integration for audio cleanup
- Team Projects (cloud collaboration) — a genuine differentiator for remote editorial teams
- Massive tutorial ecosystem in English and, increasingly, Hindi
Weaknesses:
- Subscription model means you never own the software — if you cannot pay one month, you lose access to projects
- RAM-hungry. Runs poorly on budget machines
- Color grading tools exist but are not best-in-class — most serious colorists export to DaVinci Resolve for final grade
- Regular updates sometimes break third-party plugins unexpectedly
Hardware requirements (minimum viable for 2026): 16GB RAM (32GB strongly recommended), modern 4-core processor, dedicated GPU with 4GB VRAM, SSD storage. Proxy workflows are essential for 4K on mid-range machines.
Color grading: Lumetri Color is genuinely capable for primary correction and basic secondaries. Good enough for social content. Not good enough for a DI suite doing a feature film.
VFX integration: Best-in-class among NLEs, purely because of the After Effects pipeline.
Collaboration: Team Projects (Creative Cloud subscription required for all collaborators) allows multiple editors to work on shared sequences. Works reasonably well for remote teams with stable internet.
2. DaVinci Resolve (Free + Studio)
Pricing (India market estimate, 2026): DaVinci Resolve is free. Permanently. No time limit, no watermark, no feature lock for the features most editors will ever use. DaVinci Resolve Studio (one-time purchase) is approximately Rs. 29,000–32,000. Verify at blackmagicdesign.com — one-time license, no subscription.
Learning curve: Steeper than Premiere for total beginners because the interface is page-based (Cut, Edit, Fusion, Color, Fairlight, Deliver) and feels unfamiliar. However, the Color page is so well-designed that colorists often find it intuitive faster than editors find the Edit page. Expect one to three months before you are comfortable. Expect six months before you are fast.
Where it dominates in India: DI (Digital Intermediate) and color grading suites across Bollywood and South Indian cinema. If a film goes through a serious color grade — and every film with any budget does — there is a very good chance DaVinci Resolve is involved. Increasingly, independent filmmakers and film school graduates are cutting their projects entirely within Resolve, using it as a one-stop pipeline.
Strengths:
- The free version is genuinely, scandalously powerful. There is no other word for it
- Best-in-class color grading on any platform — this is not opinion, it is industry consensus
- Fairlight audio page is a full DAW built in — no need for separate audio software
- Fusion (built-in VFX and motion graphics compositor) is robust for mid-level VFX
- One-time purchase for Studio means you own it forever
- Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux — which matters for post houses running Linux render farms
- Excellent for proxy and optimised media workflows
Weaknesses:
- The free version lacks some Studio features: neural engine tools, noise reduction, multi-user collaboration, some delivery formats, and Dolby Vision. Most editors will not hit these limits quickly, but you will eventually
- Steeper learning curve compared to Premiere Pro
- Multicam and complex multi-track narrative editing is still slightly less fluid than Avid
- Motion graphics titles and graphics within Resolve are functional but slower to build than in Premiere + After Effects
- Plugin ecosystem is smaller
Hardware requirements: Resolve is notoriously GPU-dependent. The color engine runs on GPU. Minimum 16GB RAM, but 32GB is realistic for 4K. An Nvidia or AMD GPU with at least 4–8GB VRAM. On underpowered machines, use proxy or optimised media — the software handles this gracefully.
Color grading: The industry standard. Nodes-based workflow, ACES support, HDR tools, full scopes, Power Windows, Qualifier, Magic Mask. If you want to become a colorist in India, learn Resolve. This is not debatable.
VFX integration: Fusion is capable for most indie-level compositing. For heavy VFX, studios will use Nuke — and Resolve integrates with Nuke via round-trip workflows.
Collaboration: Resolve Studio supports multi-user collaboration via shared project server. This requires a fast local network or dedicated server infrastructure — not suited for small teams working on consumer internet in India.
3. Avid Media Composer
Pricing (India market estimate, 2026): Avid offers subscription (approximately Rs. 2,900–4,200/month) and perpetual license options. Post-production facilities typically run perpetual or enterprise licenses. Verify at avid.com — pricing varies by region and license type.
Learning curve: The steepest of the four major tools. Avid has a deeply non-intuitive interface by modern standards. The keyboard shortcuts, the media management system (bins, sequences, MXF files), the way it handles multicam — all of it is different enough from other NLEs that editors often describe learning Avid as "starting over." Most experienced editors take three to four months to become productive. Beginners should expect six months to a year.
Where it dominates in India: High-budget Bollywood productions, major post houses, and television broadcast. If a film has a budget above Rs. 50 crore and is cutting in a professional Andheri post house, there is a strong probability that Avid is on the timeline. The reason is not that Avid is technically superior to its competitors in every way — it is that the senior editors, the established post houses, and the broadcast facilities built their entire infrastructure around Avid over two decades. Institutional inertia is a real thing, and in a relationship-driven industry like Bollywood, you do not throw out the workflow that your A-list director is comfortable with.
Strengths:
- The gold standard for high-volume, high-complexity editorial — feature films, long-running TV serials, news broadcast
- Media management is genuinely superior to all competitors. MXF-based media, bins, and AAF/OMF exports are the language of professional post production
- Multicam editing for drama and reality is exceptionally robust
- Frame.io integration for cloud review and approval
- The most reliable software for large projects with hundreds of hours of footage
- Industry credibility — knowing Avid signals to a post house that you are serious
Weaknesses:
- Expensive. The full professional ecosystem (Avid + storage + hardware) is out of reach for independent filmmakers
- Slow to adopt modern features — cloud collaboration, AI-assisted tools, and interface modernisation have lagged
- Color grading is basic — external round-trip to DaVinci Resolve is standard
- Not suitable for solo indie filmmakers or content creators
- The interface genuinely feels dated in 2026
Hardware requirements: Avid is optimised for Avid-certified hardware (Avid Nexis storage, qualified workstations). In practice, modern high-spec Windows machines work well. Minimum 32GB RAM for professional use, fast storage essential.
Color grading: Avid Color Management exists but is not used for final grading. Every Avid-edited film goes through a DaVinci Resolve color session.
VFX integration: AAF and OMF export to VFX departments. Standard round-trip workflow in film production.
Collaboration: Avid's strength. MediaCentral and Avid Nexis shared storage allow multiple editors to work simultaneously on the same project. This is why broadcast and post houses with large teams still build around it.
4. Final Cut Pro
Pricing (India market estimate, 2026): One-time purchase of approximately Rs. 26,500 on the Mac App Store. No subscription. Verify at apple.com/in — price is set in rupees and changes with exchange rates.
Learning curve: Genuinely easy for beginners. The magnetic timeline and skimming interface feel intuitive. Most people cutting their first project are productive within days. The depth takes time — multicam, color grading, Motion integration — but the floor is low.
Where it dominates in India: Independent filmmakers, YouTube creators, and documentary makers who work on Apple hardware. A smaller but real segment of the ad film world. Kerala cinema and independent Tamil filmmakers are more likely to be on Final Cut Pro than their Bollywood counterparts. It is not common in large post houses.
Strengths:
- One-time purchase, excellent value over time
- Optimised for Apple Silicon — on an M-series MacBook Pro or Mac Studio, it is the fastest NLE available, period. Native 4K, 6K, even 8K playback with minimal proxies
- Background rendering means you can keep working while the software renders
- Excellent for solo editors and small teams on a single machine
- Logic Pro integration for audio
- Surprisingly good color tools for an NLE
Weaknesses:
- Mac only. Not a debatable limitation — if your post house or client uses Windows, you are excluded
- Collaboration is limited compared to Avid or Premiere Team Projects. SharePlay workflows are improving but not enterprise-grade
- The magnetic timeline, while intuitive for solo work, frustrates editors trained on traditional track-based timelines
- Not taught at most Indian film institutes
- Industry adoption in Bollywood is near zero
Hardware requirements: Mac only. Any modern Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) runs it beautifully. Older Intel Macs work but lack the performance advantages that justify the choice.
Color grading: Better than Premiere, not as deep as Resolve. Good enough for indie films and content. Serious grades still go to Resolve.
VFX integration: Motion (Apple's companion app) for titles and basic compositing. After Effects via third-party workflows. Not as smooth as the Premiere-After Effects pipeline.

The Tier Below: Tools Worth Knowing About
Filmora (Windows + Mac): Around Rs. 4,000–5,500/year (market estimate). Built for creators, not professionals. Genuinely good for YouTube content, vlogs, and social media edits. The interface is drag-and-drop friendly. Do not put this on a resume if you are applying to a post house, but do not dismiss it if you are building a content creation business on the side.
HitFilm Express (Free): A strong option for filmmakers who need basic VFX compositing built into their NLE. The learning curve is real, but for indie sci-fi or action short films on a zero budget, it fills a genuine gap.
CapCut (Mobile + Desktop): The dominant mobile editing app in India for short-form content in 2026. If you create Reels or YouTube Shorts, understanding CapCut is a practical skill. Its AI-assisted features — auto-captions, beat sync, AI background removal — are genuinely impressive for the price (free for most features).
VN Video Editor (Mobile): Popular with multilingual content creators across regional film communities. Solid multi-track mobile editor.
InShot (Mobile): The standard for quick social cuts. Not a professional tool, but if you are on set creating behind-the-scenes content for a production's social media, knowing InShot saves time.
What Indian Film Institutes Actually Teach
This matters. Knowing what the institutes teach tells you what the incoming generation of assistants will know, and therefore what is becoming the common language.
FTII (Pune): Historically Avid-heavy, reflecting the Bollywood post-production standard. DaVinci Resolve has been increasingly introduced into the curriculum as the color standard.
Whistling Woods International (Mumbai): Teaches Adobe Premiere Pro as the primary NLE. Strong After Effects and DaVinci Resolve components. Reflects the commercial and OTT focus of the school's industry connections.
L.V. Prasad Film and TV Academy (Chennai/Hyderabad): Mix of Avid and Premiere, with DaVinci Resolve for color.
MAAC, Arena, and private institutes nationwide: Almost universally Adobe-first. Premiere Pro is the dominant tool at commercial training institutes because it is the most hireable skill across ad agencies, production houses, and content studios simultaneously.
The practical takeaway: If you are self-taught, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve Free are the two most employable starting points. If you want to work in a Bollywood post house long-term, add Avid to your skill set as a second language.
Proxy Workflows for Indian Internet Speeds
This section does not appear in global tutorials, and it should. Indian internet infrastructure — even with fiber connections — makes cloud-based 4K editorial impractical for most independent editors. The solution is a robust proxy workflow.
What is a proxy? A lower-resolution, compressed version of your footage that your editing software uses during the cut. Once your edit is locked, the software reconnects to the original high-resolution files for export and color grading.
- DaVinci Resolve handles proxy and optimised media generation better than any other NLE. It can create proxies in the background, automatically link them, and switch between proxy and full-resolution with a single click.
- Premiere Pro has a solid proxy workflow via Ingest Settings — you can set it to automatically create proxies on import.
- Final Cut Pro calls them "proxy media" and handles them elegantly, particularly on Apple Silicon where even original media often plays in real time.
For 4K on a mid-range Indian laptop (i5/i7, 16GB RAM, integrated or entry-level GPU): Always shoot, import, and create H.264 or HEVC proxies at 1/4 or 1/2 resolution before you start cutting. This is not optional. It is the difference between a responsive timeline and a slideshow.
The Cloud Editing Shift — and Why India Is Not Quite There Yet
Globally, cloud-based editing — Frame.io, Evercast, Sohonet, even Adobe's own cloud workflows — is becoming the norm for collaborative productions. Remote editorial teams reviewing cuts in real time, assistants uploading dailies from set directly to cloud servers, directors giving notes from wherever they are in the world.
In India: it is happening, but slowly.
The bottleneck is upload speed. A single day of 4K ARRI or RED footage can be several terabytes. Even with fast fiber, uploading that volume before the next day's shoot is unrealistic for most productions outside of large studios. Most Indian productions still use physical media — SSDs, LaCie drives, RAID arrays — to shuttle footage from set to post house.
What is working: review-and-approval platforms like Frame.io (integrated into Premiere Pro and now Apple ecosystem), Wipster, and even basic Vimeo review links. These require only compressed review files, not raw footage, and are genuinely practical even on Indian connections.
How to Choose Based on Your Career Goals
You want to work in Bollywood post production: Start with Premiere Pro to get comfortable cutting. Then learn Avid — even if it takes time. Avid fluency is a credential in that world. DaVinci Resolve for color is non-negotiable regardless.
You want to make independent feature films: DaVinci Resolve Free is your best friend. One software handles your edit, color, audio mix, and delivery. No subscription. No financial pressure. Massive online community.
You want to work in ad films, branded content, or web series: Adobe Premiere Pro is the industry standard. Pair it with After Effects and you are immediately useful to any ad agency or digital production company.
You are on a Mac and building a solo content creation business: Final Cut Pro's one-time cost and performance advantage on Apple Silicon make it the most cost-efficient professional option over a three-year horizon.
You are a total beginner with a limited budget: DaVinci Resolve Free. Download it today. It is better than software that costs Rs. 50,000.
You want to be a colorist: DaVinci Resolve. Only DaVinci Resolve. Everything else is secondary.

The Software Does Not Make the Editor
We have to say this plainly, because the internet incentivises tool obsession over craft development.
The editors who built Bollywood's visual language did not become legends because they chose the right software. They became legends because they understood rhythm, pacing, performance, and storytelling at a cellular level. Renu Saluja. Deepa Bhatia. Ritesh Soni. The tool was secondary to the instinct.
Learn the software. Master the shortcuts. Build your proxy workflow. But spend equal time studying the cuts themselves. Watch films analytically. Pause. Rewind. Ask why a cut happened at that moment and not three frames earlier. That is where the craft lives. Software is just the instrument.
Your Next Step Is Not Just Downloading Software
Here is the thing about building a career in film editing in India: the technical skill gets you in the room. The network keeps you there. And the network — especially when you are not from the industry, not from Mumbai, not already connected — is genuinely hard to build.
We built AIO Cine because we watched too many talented editors, DOP assistants, and post-production coordinators spend months learning the right software, building real skills, and then falling for fake "job opportunities" from studios that did not exist. Or working for months on projects and never getting paid.
Every production house on AIO Cine is verified before they can post a crew call. Every listing is tied to an accountable entity. You can register free as a talent or crew member, build your profile, and start getting discovered by productions that are actually hiring.
If you are serious about editing as a career, the software is step one. Building your professional presence on a platform where real productions are looking for crew — that is step two.
Register on AIO Cine — because the right opportunity should find you in a place it can actually trust.
